TRUSTNET

Popularity of Site

As a source of financial information, Trustnet seems to be finding a limited audience. It is ranked outside of the top one million sites in terms of viewers and page clicks from the past three months according to Alexa*. These statistics can be misleading sometimes though. It claims to be “the UK’s leading free and independent website for fund information and research” and promises to provide detailed investment trust research.

Site Design

Its homepage is colourful, but the information seems to be spread about in a disorganised manner. There are a variety of charts and tables chronicling the top rating funds, the biggest movers and sector analysis, but if none of these phrases means anything to you then it is a confusing introduction to the website. They would be better served to keep things simple and have the complicated information on request.

Content

It makes no secret of the fact that trust funds are its speciality and it has all its data organised in a database format, with a sort function enabling visitors to look at data based on its performance, Dividend Yield etc. over the last 1, 3 or 5 years. Each fund and trust can be compared, though this is a difficult process when you consider the sheer volume of information. It gives free daily updated analysis and performance data on all UK Unit Trusts, Investment Trusts, Pensions and many more investment funds.

The articles follow the general layout of the site insofar as they contain an array of statistical information. Anyone with a healthy interest in trust funds and a good knowledge of the terminology will be in heaven here, everyone else will be confused. None of the information is easily accessible, as wading through the succession of graphs and numbers is tiring and arduous. Trustnet re-designed their forums recently, and this has proven to be a bad move. While the forums were once awash with investors picking each other’s brains with financial queries, they now resemble a wasteland with scant discussion.

Our Summary

While it seemingly gives all conceivable information about UK trusts, its popularity is lacking. Perhaps this is due to the aforementioned disorganised structure of the home page, or maybe they have not advertised effectively. This site doesn’t seem to know how to effectively structure its information, and until it solves this problem, it will continue to languish behind the giants of the UK investment industry.
