There are two types of members of an occupational pension scheme – the active and the deferred members. Active membership applies to both defined benefit and defined contribution pension schemes. You are an active member if you are still employed by the company sponsoring the pension scheme. Usually it also implies that you are making contributions to the occupational pension scheme. However, this would not be the case with members of non-contributory final salary pension schemes, where the employer makes all of the pension contributions.
